A New Lease on Life

First Reformed Church, 8 North Church St, SCHENECTADY, NY

In 1842 Schumann produced a series of chamber music works including 3 string quartets, the piano quartet and the glorious piano quintet. He wrote in his journal that composing this work gave him “a new lease on life.” This wonderful, exuberant piece is one of the best composed for this combination of instruments. The quintet is paired with the pensive Epilogue of Rebecca Clarke for cello and piano and the dancy Thracian Suite for two violins and piano of Vasily Stoyanov. Also on the program will be the Suite Hebraique of Samuel Gardner (winner of the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for music) and having ties to the Capital Region through his grandson Eric Wiener. We will be presenting the local premiere of this beautifully crafted, never published work. Musicians of Ma’alwyck members Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, violin and Petia Kassarova, cello are joined by guest artists Theodore Arm, violin (a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Angelfire Festival), Andrew Snow, viola and Palma Catravas, piano.
